This is the Studio 27
resin kit of the Super Aguri SA05, as raced by Takuma Sato, Yuji Ide, Franck
Montagny and Sakon Yamamoto in the 2006 Formula One World Championship. Super
Aguri was very much the ‘B’ team of the full Honda F1 effort, created to
provide a race seat for Sato after he was dropped by the main team in favour of
Rubens Barrichello. Sato had a best finish of 10th, in the season-ending
Brazillian Grand Prix. The second seat was taken by Yuji Ide for the first four
races, until the FIA took away his ‘Superlicense’ (essential for racing in
F1) for his poor driving standards. Montagny then took the seat for the next
seven races, with pay-driver Yamamoto taking over for the final seven races.
Studio 27 produced a
number of Super Aguri F1 cars in 1/20 scale, unsurprising given the popularity
of Sato in Japan. The majority of the model is cast in resin, with white metal
front/rear wings, suspension parts and details. Etched parts and rubber tyres
completes the model. The decal sheet is nice, and the reacted well to Micro
Sol/Set. I used a number of Studio 27
carbon-fibre effect decal sheets, and ended up carbon fibre decaling
almost everything! It was the biggest challenge of the model, and in
future I would consider whether it’s worth the additional time/expense
to do it all again. Finally, I added a strip of wood veneer to represent
the ‘plank’ on the underside of the car. Vince14
